Your wedding cake isn't just a dessert—it’s a statement piece, a reflection of your love story, and quite possibly one of the most photographed elements of your big day (after you, of course!). But how do you ensure your cake is exactly what you envision? Working with your cake artist is a collaborative process, and I’m here to walk you through it so you can create the cake of your dreams.
1. Start with Inspiration, But Stay Open-Minded
Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, magazine clippings—bring all the inspiration you have! But remember, while it’s great to have a vision, your cake artist is there to translate your ideas into something unique and doable. Many cake artists won’t directly copy another artist’s design, as it’s important to respect originality and creativity. Think of it as commissioning a piece of edible art rather than replicating something that already exists. Keep an open mind and allow your artist to put their creative spin on things.

2. Consider Your Wedding Theme and Style
Your cake should complement your wedding style, whether it’s romantic, modern, rustic, or whimsical. Think about your colour palette, floral arrangements, and overall aesthetic. If you have a wedding dress with lace details, a cake artist can mimic that pattern with sugar work. Love the countryside? Maybe some edible wildflowers or a painted landscape will tie everything together.
3. Flavour Matters Just as Much as Design
Don’t forget—your cake needs to taste as good as it looks! Work with your cake artist to choose flavours that reflect your tastes and the season. Whether you love classic vanilla and raspberry, decadent chocolate and hazelnut, or something a bit unexpected like white chocolate, rhubarb, and almond, make sure it’s something you and your guests will enjoy.
4. Trust the Process and Timeline
Designing a wedding cake isn’t an overnight task. Your cake artist will have a process in place that likely involves:
A tasting session (yum!)
An initial consultation (where you discuss ideas, budget, and style)
A finalized design sketch or mock-up
Production and decoration leading up to your wedding Make sure to book your cake artist well in advance (at least 6 months before your wedding) to ensure availability and enough time for the creative process.
5. Budget Wisely
Wedding cakes vary in price depending on the complexity of the design, the number of tiers, and the level of detail involved. Be upfront with your cake artist about your budget so they can suggest options that work within it. If you love intricate sugar flowers but they push the price up, your artist might recommend a mix of fresh flowers and sugar work for a similar effect at a lower cost.
6. Be Clear About Logistics
Venue Restrictions: Some venues have restrictions on external food vendors, so check before booking.
Delivery & Setup: Will your cake artist deliver and set up the cake, or do you need to arrange transport?
Weather Considerations: If you’re having an outdoor wedding in summer, buttercream might not be your best friend. Your cake artist can recommend the best finishes for your setting.
7. Enjoy the Experience!
Designing your wedding cake should be fun! It’s one of the most enjoyable parts of wedding planning—tasting delicious cake, getting creative, and seeing your vision come to life. Trust your cake artist’s expertise, communicate your wishes clearly, and get ready for the big cake reveal on your special day!
